Get Off Your Bum and put on a sports tournament
Organising a sports tournament is a wonderful way to honour a loved one and to help us give support to others affected by bowel cancer.
It’s entirely up to you what sport or format you choose for your tournament. It could be a tennis match, a football competition, a swimming gala, chess tournament or maybe even a dance-a-thon. The options are endless, but what matters is that it’s a sport close to your heart. And one that will get your friends off their bums!
There’s no fixed fundraising target, but every penny you raise will make a lasting difference to people with bowel cancer. And if you need a hand with the planning, don’t worry, we’ll be here to help make sure you’ve got everything you need to make your tournament a success. Because together we can beat bowel cancer.
When Alicia and Alison lost their friend Andy to bowel cancer, they were determined to do something in his memory that would help others still living with the disease. Alicia explains: “Andy was only 31 when he passed away. Before his death, he’d done some fundraising for Beating Bowel Cancer and so we really wanted to continue what he’d started. He loved football so putting on a tournament seemed like the perfect way to keep his memory alive.
“We spoke to the local football club who let us have two pitches for free, and we convinced all our friends to get involved and enter teams. We even organised afternoon tea for people who didn’t fancy playing themselves. It was such a great day.
“We’re going make the tournament an annual event. We’ve named the winner’s cup the Andy Dickson Memorial trophy so he’ll never be forgotten.”
