Check out the wonderful things that our supporters are doing to raise awareness and funds for Beating Bowel Cancer. Here are just a few examples of recent activities. Remember to let us know if you have organised an event for the charity, so that we can feature your story here too!
Lewis Bathard cycled around the
whole coast of mainland Britain which started in 2003 in various
stages. He completed the last section from Stranraer to John O’Groats in
torrential rain after having had an operation last March to remove 22cms
of his bowel – an
amazing achievement…well done!
Nicky Renison raised £500 by organising a rock
party in memory of her uncle Peter, at a club in central London. She negotiated
the venue for free and charged £10 per person. Everyone had to
dress up in rock gear and a look-a-like Freddy Mercury was the star performer.
Michael Straker organised a football march involving
a celebrity team of Emmerdale Allstars vs Ashington football team. It
was in memory of his brother in law who died of bowel cancer and a combination
of ticket sales and raffles on the day raised £2020.
Nurse Diane Cook held a Race Night fundraiser which
was a great success and raised £1000.
Susan Gill got a relay team of people from her swimming
club in Nottingham to swim across the English Channel. They organised
a variety of events to raise money for Beating Bowel Cancer, from wine
tasting and coffee mornings to greyhound racing and together with their
justgiving page rose over £5,000. They completed the challenge in
11 hours and 45 minutes!
Becky Burton raised over £12,000 from organising
a Brighton to Littlehampton marathon walk in memory of her mother. Inspired
by the Moonwalk that she had undertaken a few years ago, she got a group
of friends together, dressed up in bum shorts and Beating Bowel Cancer
vests and power walked the 26.3 miles in just over 6 hours!
Kajal and Saijal Patel organised a dance in memory
of their mum for the local Asian Community to coincide with the Diwali
festival and raised £11,500. They were anxious to raise the awareness
of the disease after their mum passed away, having only been diagnosed
with Bowel Cancer seven weeks prior to her death.
Paul Youngman and his son Jonathan drove from Kings Lynn in Norfolk to Rimini Italy in a 14 year old Vauxhall Cavalier costing just £100! Over 4 days they tackled some of the most challenging mountain roads in Europe. They were unable to call upon any support and had to fix the car themselves if anything went wrong! They raised a fantastic £1,115.
Patient Voice Anne-Marie Hunter organised a summer ball to celebrate the end of her chemotherapy treatment. The evening had an auction and raffle with prizes ranging from a week’s accommodation in the French Alps to tickets to the FA Cup Semi Final. The event raised an incredible £12,390.15 and our sincere thanks go everyone that helped organise the event and donated so generously.
Hannah Ticehurst undertook the trip of a lifetime when she trekked the spectacular Great Wall of China and raised £3,091. Hannah says “Each of us had a moment when the achievement of completing a climb, a watchtower or a days walk overtook us. Mine was at the top of Watchtower 12 at Simatai on day 3. I was standing at the highest point after a 4500 foot climb and my reason for being in China came to the forefront….Muscles that I didn’t know existed ached but it was worth every step”
Debbie Marais, Jan Owen and Jo Eliot
Debbie Marais, Jan Owen and Jo Eliot raised £256 in memory of Jo’s dad Raymond Winstanley by organising activities for national knitting week in October. They sold knitted pumpkins, knitted cakes, knitted Christmas puddings and held a children's competition to win a knitted witch. The event helped raise awareness of bowel cancer in their local community; and many people who visited the stall shared their experience of bowel cancer.
The Flora London Marathon – April 2007
Congratulations to our team of 8 Beating Bowel Cancer runners who took the ultimate challenge and ran the London Marathon; raising a whopping £34,000!
Sarah Bruce took part for her best friend Ange, who sadly passed away in October 2007 from bowel cancer. She raised an amazing £5807.10 – this was her experience:
Serious training started the first week in January. However, Sunday April 22nd came around a little too quickly, but my friend and I arrived at Greenwich Park buzzing but unsure what to expect.
It has to be the single most exciting, exhilarating, exhausting, uplifting, emotional day I have ever experienced and the support you receive from the crowds along the whole route add to the experience. Crossing the finish line was overwhelming to say the least and it is without a doubt the best thing I’ve ever done. I firmly believe this is something everyone should do at least once
.
Well done to the 9 intrepid adventurers, who took part in our 6th overseas trek and scaled the heights of Mount Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains, in September. It was a tough challenge facing the altitude and plummeting temperatures, but it was all worth it on reaching the summit and in total they raised just over £20,000 – well done!
