Alison’s Great North Run – October 2008

My father was diagnosed with bowel cancer 5 years ago, but died in July 2007.  I wanted to take part in the Great North Run in his memory and also to raise awareness.

I raised the money through sponsorship at work, and by doing a collection at my local rugby club.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Great North Run – it was a fantastic day with brilliant support along the route – both from spectators and other runners encouraging each other.  I am glad I wore my bum shorts.  I had been very nervous about doing the event on my own, but shouldn't have worried.  I had my "bottom" pinched and patted lots of times, struck up conversations with people along the way because of them, and caused lots of people to smile.

I would urge anyone doing an event to wear them – I got coverage in the local press because of them, and was interviewed by the local radio station before the start of the run when the DJ noticed my "buttocks".  They are quite comfortable, and you don't even notice you are wearing them after a while.... except for the funny looks and comments!

It was great to meet up afterwards at the post race reception, and my children enjoyed the Kitkats – thanks!
