Insurance and risk assessment

Insurance

Any person organising or taking part in a fundraising event organised for the benefit of Beating Bowel Cancer, is not covered by Beating Bowel Cancer’s insurance and is advised to obtain their own cover as necessary.

If you organise an event that involves the public in any way, you will need to ensure you have public liability insurance. Check if your company policy covers you for such activities.

Risk Assessment

Whatever your event, it is always advisable to carry out a risk assessment to ensure that you have proper plans for public safety.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) define a risk assessment as nothing more than a careful examination of what (during your event) could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or need to take further action to prevent harm. This applies to more than just sporting events and challenges! Even a garden party can carry its own risks; boiling water causing burns, food poisoning, people tripping/falling on uneven surfaces.

A hazard means anything that can cause harm (open flames, food contamination, inadequate safety barriers, etc). A risk is the chance, high or low, that somebody will be harmed by the hazard.
