Location: village hall, your own home or garden, work or school hall

Invite: friends, family, neighbours, work colleagues, parents’ groups, gym members and the general public.

Promote: plan and invite guests 4 weeks in advance. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper publisising your event and put cards/posters in local shops, post office, places of worship or village hall.

Help: ask friends and family to help you by making a cake, or ask local supermarkets and bakers for donations of tea, coffee and cakes to keep cost down.

How to raise money: charge an entry fee, for the coffee or cake and hold a tombola or bring and buy sale.

Variation: you could also do a cheese and wine evening at your home or local bar/restaurant.

Case study: Carol held a cheese and wine evening to raise money for Trek China. She sent out invitations to friends and family as well as putting posters around her local area. Tickets cost £10 but included a glass of wine and plate of cheese and pâté. She organised 4 different types of wine at £3 a glass and got all her friends to make some different pâté’s for the evening. She also organised a raffle that raised £500 and in all raised £1500.
