John Lewis

Beating Bowel Cancer is delighted to have been selected at John Lewis’s charity of the year for 2010. This year-long partnership officially began at the start of February and a number of exciting fundraising events have already taken place.

Kate Green of John Lewis said, “We were looking for a national charity which covers all our branches but one small enough to make a difference.  Beating Bowel Cancer fitted the bill and we are really pleased to be supporting them, especially as so many of our Partners and customers will be touched by this disease.  Not only do we hope to raise valuable funds, but it’s important that we can also help to increase awareness, which could literally save lives.”

Mark Flannagan, Chief Executive of Beating Bowel Cancer adds, “We are delighted to have been chosen by John Lewis as their Charity of the Year 2010. This is our biggest corporate partnership to date and offers a valuable opportunity to reach out to partners and customers across the UK. Partners have done a tremendous job of raising money and awareness for the charity during the first half of the partnership, and we look forward to continuing the success for the next six months.”

ICAP Charity Day 2009

In 2009, Beating Bowel Cancer was chosen as one of the charities to benefit from ICAP’s 17th annual global Charity Day on 9th December 2009.

All of ICAP’s company revenues and commissions raised on the day were donated and shared between 120 charities around the world. ICAP hosted dozens of celebrity spokespeople from the various charities it gave to this year, including Kevin Spacey, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Kelly Brook and Lawrence Dallaglio. Beating Bowel Cancer’s patron, Matt Dawson, joined staff and celebrities at ICAP’s London offices to help close the deals.

Beating Bowel Cancer received a share of an incredible £11.5 million raised by the interdealer brokers.

Michael Spencer, Chief Executive Officer of ICAP, said: “To be able to raise £11.5 million for charity in one day in the current environment is an incredible achievement for the financial services industry. Funds raised through the support of our customers, staff, the charities and their patrons will help over 120 worthy causes globally this year.”

The money received will be used to fund the charity’s community pharmacy awareness campaign Behind Closed Doors.

Behind Closed Doors aims to improve awareness of bowel cancer and its symptoms to promote early diagnosis. Materials displayed within pharmacies will provide information about bowel cancer to over 50 million people and pharmacy staff will be given guidelines to help them better advise customers about the disease, saving a potential 13,000 lives.

Head of Fundraising Melissa Morley said “We were very fortunate to be selected to benefit from ICAP’s Charity Day and are absolutely delighted with the result. Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer  yet 90% of cases could be treated successfully if caught early enough . ICAP’s donation will help raise awareness of this common condition and ultimately save lives.”

Macfarlanes

Macfarlanes law firm have been great supporters over the years and in 2008 staff nominated Beating Bowel Cancer as their Charity of the Year after the recent death of a member of staff caused by bowel cancer. The partnership was a huge success with many employees from all parts of the firm getting involved and raising over £70,000, double their previous fundraising record.

Staff found boundless energy to undertake a whole variety of fundraising activities including physical challenges, a cabaret event and a calendar with photographs taken by members of staff. Staff made donations equal to one hour of pay and these were matched by their firm for their ‘Happy Hour’ event.

Oliver Court, member of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee at Macfarlanes LLP said:

"Our partnership with Beating Bowel Cancer was tremendously successful.  Members of staff from across the firm got involved in a wide range of fundraising activities, including a bespoke "Lakes Challenge" event organised by Beating Bowel Cancer.  The total sum raised for Beating Bowel Cancer was well in excess of amounts raised for previous charities of the year.  This was in no small part due to the enthusiasm, dedication and commitment of the people at the charity.  In addition, members of Macfarlanes' staff benefited from Beating Bowel Cancer's work in raising awareness of the symptoms and treatment of bowel cancer."
